Mount Iwaki in Aomori.

AEON Mall Tsugaru Kashiwa and Shin Ultraman.

After having dinner at AEON MALL Tsugaru Kashiwa, I went to see a movie Shin Ultraman. I thought the movie was for adults, and it was, without doubt, the best Ultraman film I have ever seen.

Nagao Chuka Soba in Aomori.

Woke up early in the morning and went to Nagao ramen shop around 8:30 to eat their asa-rah (morning ramen). They use a lot of niboshi (dried sardines) for their soup stock. As a result, the broth is thick but not too heavy. Like it.

Field mustard blossoms in Yokohama Town in Aomori.

After eating ramen, I headed for Yokohama Town (not that big city near Tokyo) to see the blossoms of Japanese field mustard. Yokohama Town is located at the entrance to the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture. It takes about 1.5 hours by car from the center of Aomori City.

Today I went out to eat sushi at Kikuichi Honten in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture (in the Chubu Region). As I had already decided to drink sake tonight, I brought with me a guide book on Japanese alcoholic beverages: Drinking Japan: It’s Not Just Sake written by Professor William F. O’Connor and his son Robin. In this book, they introduce a wide variety of Japanese liquor, including wine, sake, beer, shochu, and whisky. Their in-depth knowledge of each beverage is incredible.

Drinking Japan by Professor William F. O'Connor.

Another advantage of this book is the fine translation from the original English to Japanese. So, if you would like to learn Japanese by reading about the country’s alcoholic drinks, this book would be a perfect companion. Published by SANSHUSHA Publishing Co., Ltd. located at Jingumae in Shubuya Ward, Tokyo, it is now available through Amazon.co.jp. The authors also run a fantastic blog, Drinking Japan.org, which is equally informative and insightful.

Cherry blossoms at Hirosaki Castle.

The cherry blossoms are at their best now in Aomori Prefecture. So, today I woke up early and went to Hirosaki Castle, one of the most famous cherry blossom spots in the Tohoku Region. The weather was fine and it was as if I was in the right place at the right time.

Mount Iwaki as seen from Hirosaki Castle.

Mt. Iwaki (1,625m) was seen clearly from the castle. To commemorate this occasion, I bought a mug of Tsugaru ware at a street stall. Like it.

Togyo in Aomori city.

Visited Togyo, one of the most popular ramen shops in Aomori City, for lunch today. Sometimes, there is a queue in front of this shop. Togyo basically uses shrimps to make their soup stock, which is a little unusual because many ramen shops in Aomori Prefecture use dried sardines for their soup. The taste was wonderful. Like it.

After having lunch, I drove down the Aomori Prefectural Road 26. I found a group of Japanese macaques and took their photos. Mt. Iwaki was seen clearly before my eyes.

Had dinner at an outlet of CoCo ICHIBANYA in Aomori City today. CoCo ICHIBANYA is perhaps the largest curry rice chain in Japan. Anywhere you go in Japan, you can see signs of this curry rice chain. My order today was a limited-time menu that apparently contained more unusual Indian spices than their usual line-ups. Like it.

Went to Teppei in Aomori City for lunch today. Teppei is basically an izakaya (or Japanese style pub) in the evening but they also serve some set meals at lunchtime. I had their Higawari Teishoku (Special of the Day) for 900 yen. It seems to me that, generally speaking, the meals izakaya serve are the ones for people who can discern the taste, the ones for connoisseurs. Like it.

Angeniex Paris 25mm f0.95

I am sure that both Tetsu Sawamura and I are at least using similar equipment for photo-shooting ― relatively expensive mirrorless cameras and vintage lenses like an Angeniex. But why is his work in magazines or on websites always so good, while mine is not? Then, eventually I found out: photography depends on the person. The person makes or breaks the photos. Even if you hold a Gibson Les Paul guitar, you can’t become a Jimmy Page. Even if I use an Angeniex lens, I can’t become a Tetsu Sawamura! Darn it!

By the way, Mr. Sawamura will have his new book out on April 25. OLD LENS MAGIC will be available through Amazon.co.jp. (■The book is currently available in Japanese only.)

Angeniex Paris 25mm f0.95

“Angeniex is for cherry blossoms”―this is a famous phrase Tetsu Sawamura, a photographer and writer in Japan, once uttered. Angeniex is a legendary French lens maker founded in the 1930s. With the above phrase, Sawamura probably meant to say, “Angeniex lenses are among the best for taking pictures of cherry blossoms.” So, it was a matter of course for me to bring an X-T1 camera with a P. Angeniex Paris 25mm f0.95 lens to nearby Lake Sanaru Park (in Shizuoka Prefecture in the Chubu Region), which is filled with cherry trees today. I shot about fifty frames there, only to find, upon returning home, almost all were duds. I don’t think the photo above is very good, but it is at least better than the other duds. Darn it!

Mr. Anthony Horowitz, I think you are not fair! Today I finished reading your The Word is Murder both in Japanese and English. (When I purchase a book, I usually purchase two copies, Japanese and English, to learn how to translate.) I was not able to find out who the true culprit was until the very last minute. But probably no readers were. It is because you are revealing new information after 80% of the way into the story.

Agatha Christie is almost always pretty fair to her readers. She is a real whodunit writer in the true sense of the word. We can enjoy a pure win-or-lose game with her. I think I won (managed to solve the puzzles) at her Three Act Tragedy and The ABC Murders, but I completely lost at The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Even when I lost, I was happy because it was a fair game. But you are not pitting your wits against your readers. The Word is Murder is not a detective story but just a piece of intriguing, mysterious, adventurous crime fiction story. Mr. Horowitz, I say again, you are not fair!

Anyway, I think The Word is Murder is a great book, and of course, it sold very well in Japan. We can purchase the book (in Japanese ) through Amazon.co.jp.

Gobanken in Aomori.

Ate the Katsu Curry (curry rice topped with deep-fried pork cutlet) at Gobanken in Aomori City. This shop is run by an elderly husband and wife. The husband cooks and the wife takes orders. It seemed she somehow got what I wanted to eat because I finally got what I ordered. There were several other customers in the shop. Like it.

Enjoyed bathing at a public bath called Tara Pokki Onsen today. Located in Tsurugasaka, Aomori, this onsen (hot spring) facility is one of the hidden gem type of places known only by local onsen connoisseurs. Being an alkaline hot spring, it feels as if the onsen water sticks to your skin. I have visited many onsen facilities in Aomori Prefecture, and Tara Pokki is definitely among the best.
